Getting The Right Moving Valuation Coverage

It is important to understand Household Goods Liability Coverage before you book with any mover. By law, moving companies cannot sell moving insurance but they are required to provide Basic Valuation coverage. Movers may also provide Additional Valuation. This offers greater protection for household goods that can easily be repaired or replaced in the event of damage or loss.

What about things that cannot be easily replaced or repaired?

Do you have high value items, antiques, fine art, sculptures, specialized equipments, irreplaceable goods and custom-built furniture? You may want to consider Moving Insurance to properly protect your belongings. If you have Homeowners, Renters or Business Insurance, you can check with your insurance provider to see if they can insure your move. Otherwise, you can purchase Moving Insurance from a third party like MovingInsurance.com or another third party provider like E-moving Insurance.

ADDITIONAL VLUATION OPTIONS

To purchase Additional Valuation coverage for household goods, please see coverage levels below. Please note that Additional Valuation can be added to your contract as soon as you book and no later than 48hrs before your move date.

Let us know the level of protection you want, and the items that you want covered. Items under Additional Valuation must have their condition thoroughly inspected and documented in photos/videos before being handled by the movers.

Additional Valuation does NOT cover:

  • Boxes packed by the customer or other parties. Unless the boxes show significant signs of impact/damage, movers are not responsible for items in the boxes.
  • Moves in or out of Storage or loading/unloading other Pods/Trucks. Additional valuation does not apply to damage incurred while in storage, or on transit with pods or other trucks.
  • Extraordinary/ High Value items*. This includes jewelry, paper currency, and valuable personal documents such as birth certificates and passports. Extraordinary/high value items must be transported by the customer themselves. However, if an item has extraordinary (or high) value is included in your shipment, you must specify in writing prior to your move.
  • You are also not covered for things outside the movers control. These include circumstances such as earthquakes, fires, floods, windstorm, etc.

If you choose Additional Valuation coverage:

  1. We reserve the right to inspect and photograph item(s) under Additional Valuation before preparing for the move.
  2. If electronics and devices such as TVs are listed, they will be tested to ensure they are properly functioning before preparing for the move.
  3. We reserve to right to inspect and repack boxes that are poorly packed (as needed).
  4. If you instruct us not to pack or protect any item(s) against our better judgment, we will not be held responsible for any damage(s) to the item(s) due to inadequate protection.

When filing a claim in the event of damage:

  1. Item(s) will be first repaired so it is in the same condition as it was before being damaged.
  2. If the item is irreparable, the mover will attempt to either replace the item with another identical, similar or of like-kind
  3. OR you will likely be given the fair-market price for what the item is worth. This is after depreciation and deductible is taken into account.
  4. The resolution is handled all at the movers discretion.

When it comes to moving, there’s no avoiding risk. While our team works hard to make sure your move is as risk-free as possible, accidents can happen. In the moving industry, just like other transportation vertical, it’s good to be protected in the case of unlikely events.

*Extraordinary/High-Value Item Disclosure:

Additional Valuation release options are governed by federal, law under the Surface Transportation Board of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Movers are not required to reimburse you for any item that is valued at more than $100 per pound unless it is specifically listed on the shipping documents. This is set by the Surface Transportation Board, the federal organization that oversees moving companies.  So unless an item that weighs more than $100 per pound was properly listed on the shipping contract at least 48hrs before the move, it will not be covered if it is lost, damaged or destroyed during the move. You will have to note everything on your list that is valued at more than $100 per pound and make sure it is recorded on your contract documents so that you are covered.

Basic Valuation Vs. Addition Valuation?

Every licensed mover provides Basic Valuation at no extra cost. At The ProMovers, Basic Valuation is included in the hourly rate for coverage of damage or lost items at $0.30 per pound per article—regardless of the item’s value. A coffee table which may only weigh 20 pounds, is still covered under $0.30 valuation. If the item were damaged, you would only receive $6 on a 20lb item. Therefore, you may want to opt for greater protection coverage. Especially if your coffee table is worth a lot more than $6 dollars.

Additional Valuation offers various levels of coverage to compensate for lost or damaged household items at full replacement value, less depreciation and deductible. If an an item is lost or damaged while in your movers care, your mover will, at its discretion, offer to first repair the item. If the item cannot be repaired, they will seek to replace with a similar make & model, or provide an appropriate cash settlement for the current market replacement value.

Whether you move with us or another NYC moving company, it is important to know your rights and responsibilities when hiring a mover. One of the vital things to understand is Household Goods Liability & Coverage. Even the most careful moving companies can encounter unexpected circumstances, and accidents can happen. Therefore, you may want to consider protecting your belongings on a move with either Additional Valuation or Moving Insurance.
